Drain clearing is the fast fix for a clog. A licensed First Choice Plumbing tech cables the blocked line, pulls the clog out, then runs water to prove it drains. Most calls take about 90 minutes. We clear kitchen, bath, laundry and main lines across Gainesville, Hawthorne and Alachua County, and we can put a camera in the line if the clog keeps coming back.

Why does the same drain keep clogging?

Drain cleaning cable fed into an open sewer cleanout in a yard next to the lid
Running the cable down the yard cleanout to open the line.

A clog almost never shows up out of nowhere. It builds. Grease goes down warm, cools, and sets up on the pipe wall like candle wax. Hair and soap grab onto it. Wipes that say flushable go in whole and come out whole. Add a few years and the inside of a two-inch line is closer to an inch.

Around here there is one more piece. Gainesville grew hard through the 1960s and 70s, so a lot of homes on this side of town still drain through original cast iron. Cast iron corrodes from the inside out. The wall goes rough and pitted, and rough pipe catches everything that touches it. That is why a house that never clogged for twenty years suddenly clogs twice in one winter.

Out east and out in the county, roots are the other usual suspect. A root finds a hairline crack at a joint, gets in where the water is, and grows into a mat that catches paper.

Here is the honest part. Clearing the clog fixes today. If the pipe itself is the reason the clog keeps coming back, you deserve to be told that instead of paying us to come out every four months. We will show you which one you have.

How much does drain clearing cost?

It starts with a $69 service fee to come out. That covers the trip and the diagnosis, and on larger jobs it comes off the price entirely.

We are not going to print one number for the clog itself, because a bathroom sink and a main line under a slab are not the same work and pretending they are is how people get surprised. What we will do is tell you the price before we start, at your house, with the machine still on the truck. If you do not like it, you have paid $69 and we shake hands.

If the visit turns into something bigger, financing runs down to about $500 through our lender, so a bad week does not have to become a bad year.

And if your drains are a recurring headache rather than a one-time thing, ask about the maintenance plan instead of paying full freight every time.

Who is behind First Choice Plumbing?

Will Harrod. Florida certified plumbing contractor, license CFC1430748, and the person who still walks the estimates himself.
It is a local shop. Small on purpose. Will would rather run a tight crew he trusts in your house than a big one he does not.

Is it one drain, or is it the main line?

Take thirty seconds and check. It changes how fast you need us.

Probably just that fixture: one sink is slow and everything else drains fine. The tub is fine. Flushing a toilet does not affect it. That is a branch line, and it is usually a same-visit fix.

Probably the main line: flush a toilet and water comes up in the tub or the shower. More than one fixture is slow at the same time. The toilet gurgles when the washing machine drains. There is water at the lowest drain in the house. That is the whole house trying to get out through one restricted pipe, and it will not wait.

What to do while you wait: stop running water, including the dishwasher and the washing machine, since every gallon has nowhere to go. Do not keep flushing to test it. Put a towel down at the lowest fixture. If you know where your main cleanout is, usually a capped white or black pipe outside near the house, tell us when you call and it saves us time on arrival.

What is the difference between drain clearing and drain cleaning?

Most companies use the two words like they mean the same thing. They do not, and knowing the difference keeps you from buying the wrong one.

Drain clearing is a service. You have a clog, we come out, we cable the line, we pull the blockage out, and we run water until it drains right. In and out, usually about 90 minutes. That is this page.

Drain cleaning is a job. When the pipe wall itself is coated in years of scale, a cable punches a hole through the middle and the water starts moving again, but the coating is still there. So it closes back up. Real cleaning means descaling: a machine with chains and diamond bits that mills the inside of the pipe back to bare metal. That takes one to two days, and it is a different page. Drain Cleaning and Descaling

If a cable is all you need, that is all we will sell you. If we cable your line and it clogs again in a month, that is the pipe telling you something, and the honest next step is a sewer camera inspection so you can see it for yourself instead of taking our word for it.

What happens when we show up?

You call or text and tell us what is doing what.

Kim asks a few questions to figure out whether this is a branch line or the main, so the right machine is already on the truck. If it is after hours and the house is backing up, say so.

We find the right access point and cable the line.

Drop cloths down, shoe covers on. We work from a cleanout when there is one, because that is faster and cleaner than pulling a toilet. We cut through the clog, pull the debris back out, and keep going until the cable runs free.

We prove it drains, then tell you the truth about it.

We run water hard and watch it go. Then we tell you what came out, why it happened, and whether this is a once-a-decade thing or a pipe that is going to keep doing this. If it is the pipe, we will say so and give you options, not a scare story.

Our techs work in your house the way we would want somebody working in ours. Every hole we cut gets professionally patched. We do not paint, and we will tell you that up front.

Should I try liquid drain cleaner first?

We would rather you did not, and we are telling you that knowing it might cost us a call.

Caustic drain openers work by heat and chemistry. When the line is fully blocked, that chemistry sits in one spot against the pipe instead of flushing through. On older cast iron and galvanized lines, which is a lot of Gainesville, that sitting is what does the damage. It also means that when we do open the line, somebody is standing in a splash zone of it.

If you want to try something first, try these.

Clean the stopper first

Pull the pop-up or the sink stopper and clean the hair off it, since a surprising number of slow bathroom sinks are just that.

Fill the sink and let it dump

Fill the sink completely and let it dump all at once, because volume moves more than a trickle.

Enzymes, monthly, for a sluggish kitchen drain

For a kitchen drain that has been sluggish for a while, enzyme treatments used monthly will not hurt anything, they just work slowly.

Grease goes in a can, not the sink

And the one that prevents the most calls: pour grease into a can, not the sink. Every plumber in Alachua County would thank you.

The Difference Is in the Details

What matters on a clog callFirst Choice PlumbingTypical franchise or big-name dispatcher
What it costs to get somebody out$69 flat service fee, published right here, waived on larger jobsNo price published anywhere on the site. You find out at the door
Who actually shows upThe same small local crew, and the owner still runs estimates himselfWhoever the dispatch board assigns that day, often a rotating subcontractor
Clearing versus cleaningTwo different services, explained, priced separately, and we tell you which one you needOne word for both, so the upsell is easier to make at the sink
Proving the fixWe run water in front of you, and a camera is available when the clog repeatsDrains again, invoice signed, no explanation of why it happened

After the visitTwo year parts and labor warranty, and a straight answer about whether the pipe is the real issueWarranty varies by franchise, and the recommendation is usually the biggest one

None of that is complicated. It is just what happens when the person who owns the company is the person whose name is on the license.

Not an emergency? Book a drain visit online and pick your window.

What if it clogs again next month?

Then cabling was treating a symptom, and it is time to look at the pipe.

Here is what that costs you if nobody looks. You pay for a clear three or four times a year. Meanwhile the line keeps degrading, and one day it stops being a clog and starts being a backup into the house on a Sunday. At that point you are dealing with a cleanup crew, not a plumber, and the pipe still has to be fixed.

Looking is cheap by comparison. A sewer camera inspection puts the line on a screen, and you see what we see. From there the honest options are usually a full descaling to restore the inside of the pipe, trenchless pipe lining that rebuilds the line from the inside with no trench across your yard, or a sewer line repair or replacement if it is too far gone to save. Old cast iron in particular is a strong candidate for cast iron pipe lining.

Cutting up your house is not the only way to fix a sewer line. That is worth knowing before somebody quotes you a trench.

Who calls us for a clog?

Older Gainesville homes

Anything built before the mid seventies is probably still draining through cast iron, and cast iron collects everything. We clear it, and we tell you honestly how much life is left in it.

Landlords and student rentals

Six people in a house built for four is hard on a kitchen line. We can be there fast, and we invoice in a way your bookkeeper will not hate.

Restaurants and commercial buildings

A blocked floor drain during service is a shut-down. We schedule around your hours, including evenings and weekends.

Homes on septic out in the county

Sometimes the line is fine and the tank is the reason nothing is moving. We will tell you which it is before you pay to cable something that is not clogged.

Drain clearing questions we get asked

Most standard clogs run about 90 minutes from the time we walk in to the time the water is moving right. A main line that is hard to access, or one packed with roots, can take longer. If it is going to run long, we tell you before we start, not after.

There is a $69 service fee to come out, and it is waived on larger jobs. The price for the clearing itself depends on which line it is and how we have to get to it, and you get that number at your house before any work starts.

Clearing opens a clog and gets you draining again, usually in one visit. Cleaning, or descaling, mills years of buildup off the pipe wall and takes one to two days. Clearing is a service. Cleaning is a job.

Usually because the pipe itself is rough, scaled, offset or full of roots, so the clog rebuilds in the same spot. A camera run will show you which one it is, and then you can decide what to do with real information.

On older cast iron and galvanized lines, which a lot of Gainesville still has, it can be. When a line is fully blocked the chemical sits against the pipe instead of flushing through, and heat plus caustic is hard on old metal. We would rather you called.

A cleanout is the easiest and cleanest way in, and if you have one, tell us where it is when you call. If there is not one, we have other access options, including pulling a toilet. We will always tell you the access plan before we open anything.

Yes, and it is the right call when a drain has clogged more than once. You watch the monitor with us. Nobody should be asked to approve a pipe repair they have never seen.

Yes. Call the same number, 352-377-9447. If the whole house is backing up, that is not a next-morning problem, and we would rather hear from you at 2 a.m. than see it Monday.
