Your disposal hums and nothing happens. Or it leaks into the cabinet and soaks the paper towels you stuffed under there. Or it just quit.

Locally owned, owner on the job. A disposal typically lasts 8 to 15 years before replacement. Kitchen and bath fixtures
Garbage disposal installation in Gainesville, FL is usually a one visit job. First Choice Plumbing charges a flat $69 to come out, diagnoses whether the unit is jammed, leaking or finished, and either repairs it or swaps it the same day. New units are sized to the household, wired to code, tested, and covered by a two year parts and labor warranty. Call (352) 377-9447.
Four things go wrong with a disposal, and they are not equally expensive. Here is the honest read on each one so you know what you are looking at before anybody quotes you.
If it is leaking, shut the water off under the sink and put a bucket under it. Then call us. A slow leak rots the cabinet base long before it floods the floor.
That is a jam, not a dead motor. Something is wedged between the spinning plate and the grind ring and the motor is stalled. Kill the power at the wall switch and the breaker first. Then use the little hex wrench that came with the unit in the hole underneath and work it back and forth until it turns freely, pull whatever is in there out with tongs, and push the red reset button on the bottom. That fixes it more often than not, and it costs you nothing. If it hums again the next day, the unit is on its way out.
No hum, no click. Check the reset button first, then the breaker, then the switch. If all three are fine, you are looking at a failed motor or a bad switch, and at that point a replacement usually beats a repair on price.
Where it leaks tells you the whole story. A drip at the top means the sink flange seal has given up, which is a real repair. A drip at the dishwasher hose or the drain elbow is usually a gasket or a clamp. Water coming out of the bottom seam of the unit itself means the housing is cracked or corroded through, and no amount of putty fixes that. Get a pan under it and call us, because the cabinet base is what pays for a slow leak.
The disposal is fine. The drain line past it is not. That is a drain problem, not a disposal problem, and we will tell you so instead of selling you a unit you do not need. Drain clearing.
It is a flat $69 for us to come out, look at it, and tell you what it needs. That fee gets waived on larger jobs. We think publishing that number is the least a plumber can do, and you will notice most of the sites you just clicked through did not publish anything.
Past that, the price depends on two things: the horsepower you want and whether the drain and electrical under there are ready for it. You get the full number in writing before we start, not after. Nothing gets added to the bill without you agreeing to it first.

First Choice Plumbing is Will Harrod, Florida Certified Plumbing Contractor CFC1430748. It is a locally owned shop: Will handles estimating and the big work, Mike runs the service calls, and Kim answers the phone and dispatches the trucks. Will still shows up on jobs. That is not a marketing line, it is how the company is built. When the owner is the one standing in your kitchen, nobody has to guess who is accountable for the work.
The most common call. We pull the old unit, check the sink flange and the drain arm while we are in there, set the new disposal, tie in the dishwasher line, test it under load, and take the old one with us. Sized to your kitchen, not to whatever was on the truck.
Jams, failed splash guards, leaking flanges, bad gaskets, dishwasher inlets that were never knocked out at install. If a repair is the honest answer, we repair it. If the housing is corroded through, we will tell you that a repair is money down the drain and let you decide.
No disposal under there now? We can add one, as long as the drain configuration and the electrical will carry it. We will look at both before we quote it, because a disposal added to the wrong drain setup becomes a clog every other month.
Restaurants, cafes and church kitchens across Gainesville and Alachua County. Different animal entirely: higher horsepower, a dedicated circuit, and it has to be coordinated with your grease interceptor and your utility’s fats, oils and grease rules.
We install and service septic systems too, which means we will tell you the truth about whether a disposal belongs on your tank. More on that below.

You can. Nothing in Florida stops you. Whether you should is a different question, and a lot of the folks we work with out in Hawthorne, Melrose, Windsor, Micanopy and northern Marion County are on a septic system and a well. Here is the plain version.
A disposal sends ground food into the tank instead of into the trash can. Food scraps are mostly water, so it is not as dramatic as some people make it sound. But it does add solids, and solids are the thing your tank has to hold until somebody pumps it. The EPA’s guidance is that homes running a disposal generally need pumping more often. A tank that would have gone three to five years between pump-outs can end up on a one to two year schedule.
Florida makes that math tighter than it is up north. Our water table is high and our soil is sandy, so a drain field here is already working harder than a drain field in Ohio. Anything that pushes more solids toward it shortens its life, and a drain field is the single most expensive part of the whole system to replace.
So this is what we actually tell people. If your tank is newer, properly sized, and you are willing to pump it on a shorter schedule, a disposal is fine and we will put one in. If your tank is old, undersized, or you already have a drain field that struggles after a hard rain, we will tell you to skip it. We would rather sell you nothing today than sell you a $200 appliance that helps kill a $12,000 drain field.
Not sure which one you are? We can locate and inspect the system while we are out. Septic services
Most people buy on price and end up back where they started in three years. Horsepower is the number that matters, and there are really only three answers.
One third horsepower is builder-grade. It is what gets dropped into rental units and spec houses because it is cheap. One or two people who cook lightly can live with it. Everybody else outgrows it.
One half horsepower is the honest starting point for a normal household. It handles daily cooking for a family without stalling every time somebody scrapes a plate.
Three quarter to one horsepower is what we put in for families that cook seriously, houses that entertain, and any kitchen where the disposal has already failed once. More torque means fewer jams, and the better units in this range grind in more than one stage and run noticeably quieter because the housing is insulated.
One more thing worth paying for: stainless grind components instead of galvanized. Our water here is moderately hard, around 8 grains per gallon on the Gainesville system, and hard water is unkind to cheap metal over ten years.
Continuous feed or batch feed? Continuous feed is the standard, runs off a wall switch, and lets you keep feeding scraps while it runs. Batch feed only runs when the stopper is seated in the drain, which makes it the safer pick if you have small kids in the house. Batch feed units cost more and are harder to find, but if that is what you want, we will get one and install it.

It is jammed. Something is stuck between the spinning plate and the grind ring, and the motor is stalled out rather than dead. Cut the power at the switch and the breaker, work the hex wrench in the hole on the bottom of the unit back and forth until it turns freely, pull the debris out with tongs, then press the red reset button. If it jams again right away, the unit is worn out.
It is a flat $69 for us to come out and diagnose it, and that fee is waived on larger jobs. The install price depends on the horsepower you choose and whether the drain and the electrical under your sink are ready for it. You get the full number in writing before any work starts.
Yes, and nothing in Florida prohibits it. But a disposal sends more solids into the tank, so most homes running one need pumping more often, sometimes every one to two years instead of every three to five. With Florida's high water table and sandy soil, that extra load is harder on a drain field here than it would be up north. If your tank is newer and correctly sized, you are fine. If it is old or already struggling, we will tell you to skip it.
Half horsepower is the sensible floor for a normal household. Three quarter to one horsepower is worth it if you cook a lot, entertain, or have already burned through one unit. One third horsepower is builder grade and most families outgrow it quickly.
Eight to fifteen years, with ten to twelve being typical when the unit is looked after. Hard water, grease and constant jamming shorten that considerably.
Grease and cooking oil, coffee grounds, eggshells, bones, and anything stringy like celery, corn husks or artichoke leaves. Also starchy loads of pasta and rice, which swell and turn into paste in the trap. Grease is the worst of them: it goes down warm and hardens in your line, and then it is a drain job. Drain descaling
Plenty of people do. The parts that catch homeowners out are the sink flange seal, the dishwasher knockout plug, and the electrical, and getting any of those wrong turns a Saturday into a leak inside the cabinet. If you want it done and warrantied, that is what we are for.
