If you have snaked the same line twice this year, the clog is not your problem. The pipe is.

Drain descaling in Gainesville, FL is the mechanical cleaning of an old cast iron drain line. A rotating chain and carbide head mills rust, scale and hardened grease off the pipe walls, restoring the original diameter that a snake cannot reach. First Choice Plumbing runs a camera before and after, so you see the pipe you paid to clean. Call 352-377-9447.
Usually not the detection itself. Most policies treat finding the leak as a diagnostic cost the homeowner pays, the same way you pay for a diagnosis before a repair. What many Florida policies do consider is the resulting water damage and the cost of getting to the leak, which can be the far bigger number. Your policy and your adjuster decide, not us.
What we can tell you is that claims live or die on documentation. Adjusters want to know where the leak was, what failed, when it was found, and what it damaged. So we write it up: the location, photos, what we found, and the repair scope. You hand that to your adjuster and you are not arguing from memory.
We work with insurance companies on this all the time, and we will talk to your adjuster directly if that makes your life easier. Insurance claim leak detection. What your adjuster will ask for is listed below.

You usually don’t get one dramatic sign. You get a slow pile of small ones, and most people put up with them for years before somebody explains what they mean. Here is what we look for.
You don’t have to guess at any of this. A camera down the cleanout answers it in about twenty minutes, and you get to look at the screen with us.
Descaling is priced by the job, because a forty foot straight run under a small house and a four story stack in an old commercial building are not the same work. What we can tell you up front is how the money starts: $69 to come out, waived on larger jobs, and a firm number before anybody turns a machine on. No surprise line items at the end.
Jobs over about $500 can be financed through Wisetack, and it takes a few minutes to see what you qualify for.
Now the part nobody enjoys. Putting it off does not hold steady, it compounds. Scale keeps growing, so the clogs come closer together and each snaking costs money that buys you nothing permanent. Waste sitting against rough walls keeps corroding the iron from the inside, and a pipe that could have been cleaned this year turns into a pipe that has to be lined or dug up in a few years. The worst version is the one we get called to at 2 a.m.: a main line that finally gave up and backed up into the house, plus flooring, plus drywall, plus an insurance claim.
Cleaning a pipe you already own is almost always the cheapest move you have left. It just has to happen while the pipe is still worth cleaning.
First Choice Plumbing is locally owned and based out of Hawthorne. Will Harrod is the owner and the license holder, Florida certified plumbing contractor CFC1430748, and he still runs the estimates himself.
That’s the whole pitch on who we are. Small crew, background checked techs in your home, the owner reachable, and nobody working on commission to talk you into more than you need.
Cast iron is a good pipe. It lasted fifty years in your house, which is more than most materials can say. What it doesn’t do well is stay smooth.
Two things work on it at the same time.
Water and bacteria react with the iron and grow rust in raised mounds called tuberculation. Those mounds are rough, and rough walls catch everything: grease from the kitchen, hair from the shower, paper, coffee grounds, all of it.
Florida sand moves and the water table sits high, so old lines settle into low spots where waste sits instead of running.
GRU water comes out of the Floridan Aquifer and runs moderately hard, roughly 140 milligrams per liter as calcium carbonate, about 8.2 grains per gallon. That is not aggressive water, but it does leave mineral behind, and mineral plus grease plus rust is the crust we mill off your pipe walls.
Warm grease goes down looking like water and cools into a coating twelve feet later. In restaurants it happens in months. In a house it happens over decades, and one day the line that never gave you trouble backs up on Thanksgiving.
We put a camera down the cleanout and walk the line on screen. You see the scale, the low spots, any cracks or breaks. This matters, because if the pipe is broken rather than just dirty, descaling is the wrong call and we are going to tell you so before you spend a dollar on it. Sewer camera inspection
The machine feeds a flexible shaft with a chain head on the end. The chains spin and file the rust, scale and hardened grease off the walls while water carries the debris down the line. We size the head to the pipe, and we run it at a speed the pipe can take. On an old line this is careful work, not brute force, which is exactly why a trained hand matters more than horsepower here.
Same line, clean walls, full diameter. You get to see the difference instead of taking our word for it. If the camera shows a section that needs more than cleaning, you get a straight recommendation and a price, not a scare.
Most houses take one to two days. Bigger commercial stacks can take longer, and we schedule those around your hours.
Four different fixes, four different price tags. Picking the wrong one is how people end up paying twice. Here is how we sort it.
Jetting uses high pressure water. It is very good on grease and soft buildup and it is gentle in the right hands. On heavy iron scale it cleans the channel but it does not always take the walls back to bare metal.
Descaling is mechanical. Chains and carbide, physically cutting the crust off. This is the one for hard, layered rust in old cast iron, and it is the only method that reliably gives you the original diameter back.
Lining is what you do when the pipe is scaled and also cracked, split at the bottom, or leaking. We descale first because epoxy will not bond to a dirty wall, then we line it and you get a new pipe inside the old one with no trenching through your slab. Trenchless pipe lining and cast iron pipe lining
Replacement is for lines that are collapsed, badly bellied or offset at the joints. No cleaning fixes a pipe that is broken in half.
We would rather run a camera and tell you that a $300 clearing handles it than sell you a two day job you did not need. That is not us being nice. It’s that we live here and we would like to still be your plumber in ten years.
| What Matters | First Choice Plumbing | Typical Drain Company or Big-Name Brand |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis | Camera down the line before we quote, and you watch the screen with us | Quote from the doorway, camera sold as an add on afterward |
| Clearing vs cleaning | Two named services at two prices, and we tell you which one you actually need | Both called "drain cleaning," priced like the bigger one |
| Proof of work | Camera pass after the job so you see the clean pipe you paid for | "It's flowing now," and you take their word for it |
| Who shows up | A small local crew. The owner still runs estimates and still gets on jobs | Whoever the dispatch board sends, commission attached |
| Pricing posture | $69 flat to come out, waived on larger jobs, price before work starts | Free estimate, then a tablet full of "options" at the kitchen table |
| When you don't need it | We say so, and sell you the smaller job instead | The recommendation is always the biggest one |
| Backing | Two year parts and labor warranty, licensed CFC1430748 | Warranty varies by tech and by franchise |
$69 to come out, waived on larger jobs. Price before we start. If a smaller job fixes it, that’s the job we’ll sell you.
Usually, yes, and that is the whole reason we schedule commercial work the way we do. Kitchens, salons, older office buildings and multi story stacks are the worst offenders for scale, because grease and volume are constant. They are also the places where a Tuesday lunch shutdown costs more than the plumbing.
We scope the line, tell you honestly how many hours it needs, and put the crew in when you’re closed: evenings, overnight, or a slow weekday morning. If your building has multiple stacks we sequence them so you always have working drains somewhere.
For an operator, descaling is the cheap move. It buys you years on pipe you already own and it postpones the conversation about relining or replacement. When that conversation does come, we can line the stack from the inside without tearing up your floor.

We run out of Hawthorne and cover Gainesville and the rest of Alachua County, plus Melrose, Keystone Heights, Interlachen, Micanopy, Waldo, High Springs, Newberry, Archer and Williston. The older the neighborhood, the more of this work we do, and the in town Gainesville homes from the 1960s and 70s are where cast iron scale shows up worst.

Descaling is the mechanical cleaning of a drain pipe's interior walls. A flexible shaft with a spinning chain and carbide head mills off rust, scale and hardened grease until the pipe is smooth and back to its original diameter. It is the deep clean version of drain work, not a clog clear.
Not when the head is sized to the pipe and run at the right speed by someone who knows what the pipe can take. Descaling removes corrosion, it does not cut into sound iron. If a camera shows the pipe is already cracked or paper thin, we tell you that and talk about lining or replacement instead of cleaning it.
Most houses are one to two days. Length of run, number of branches, how much access we have and how heavy the scale is all move that number. Commercial stacks take longer and we schedule those around your business hours.
No. Jetting uses high pressure water and is excellent on grease and soft buildup. Descaling is mechanical and is what hard iron scale in old cast iron actually needs. Some jobs get both. We decide after we see the camera, not before.
For an older home, every year or two is a reasonable maintenance rhythm once the line has been descaled. Restaurants and heavy grease kitchens usually need it more often. If you are getting backups more than once a year, that is the line telling you it is overdue.
Yes. Epoxy lining will not bond to a wall covered in rust and grease, so descaling is a required first step on almost every cast iron lining job. If you are heading toward lining anyway, the descaling is not wasted money, it is part of the work.
That is exactly what it is for. Twenty minutes with a camera down the cleanout shows whether you have a clog, heavy scale, a belly, or a break, and you watch the screen with us. The recommendation comes from what is on the video, not from a price sheet.
